On pg. 152 of Chapter two of Bill Strickland's book he describes that the main reason for his success was his unequivocal passion for wanting to help kids in the community and continously learn more in order to be the best person he can be. When he went to the meeting at the elite club in pittsburgh financial district he described that Mr. Mathieson probably knew he was just copying his every move but the reason he didnt just write him off was due to the fact that he was trying his best to make a good impression and he took such a small thing as lunch so seriously.
My question is how do we take this passion and instill it in kids in inner-city public schools. Strickland says that "I didn't pursue a set of skills or a training program, then try to market myself to the world..... I just followed the lead of the things that inspired and excited me". Is it just an unchangeable situation that fits the whole school is school scenario and you have to just go through it and if you want to succeed you will take it seriously? or are we supposed to change something. What plagues me about the whole education thing is that all of our professors and alot of the people we look up to, the Obama's, the Buffets, and Whitman's of the world went to high school and then college and did what they have to do while we have some kids who quite frankily dont want to do jack. Can we just instill passion on things and structures that exist outside of school like Manchester Craftsman Guild that are outside of school and hope it propels them to realize the importance of school or should we drastically change our schooling system.
I feel like in our education we try to funnel kids not into careers that"inspire and excite" as Strickland felt about his work but just can make them monetarily successful, and when you have kids in small towns like Meadville for example and dont get to see alot of wealth and prosperity taking school seriously and becoming a doctor, lawyer or nurse just does not seem that interesting to them, but should we try to change the culture of towns and people and urge them to foster the desire with in kids to learn for their own and treat school no matter how strenuous, uninteresting, and tedious it is, as a stepping stone or change the culture within our schools?
